Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?

Your marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar earned — the highest bracket you're in. Your effective rate is your total tax ÷ total income. If you earn $80,000, your marginal federal rate is 20.5%, but your effective federal rate is much lower because the first $57,375 is taxed at 15% and the first $16,129 is tax-free.

How much CPP do I pay in 2025?

For 2025, CPP contributions are 5.95% on earnings between $3,500 (exemption) and $71,300 (maximum pensionable earnings), capped at $4,034.10/year. CPP2 applies an additional 4% on earnings between $71,300 and $81,900. Your employer matches your CPP contribution dollar-for-dollar.

What is EI and how much do I pay?

Employment Insurance (EI) premiums in 2025 are 1.64% of insurable earnings up to a maximum of $65,700/year, capped at $1,077.48. Quebec residents pay a lower rate (1.31%) because Quebec has its own parental insurance plan (QPIP).

Why is my actual paycheck different from this estimate?

This calculator uses simplified tax brackets and doesn't account for: RRSP contributions, pension deductions, union dues, additional tax credits (disability, tuition, childcare), commission income, multiple income sources, or Quebec-specific deductions. Use this for a ballpark estimate — your employer's payroll system has the full picture.
